Our Vision
A Fresh Oasis and the Beginning of a Mighty River
Long ago Isaiah prophesied a time when, "waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert." (Is 35:6) Jesus fulfilled this ancient prophesy when he told the Samaritan woman at the well, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." (Jn 4:13-14)
Our vision for Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church is that we will be a fresh oasis for many people in the desert and wilderness regions of their lives. Just as an inviting fountain greets those who enter our church, our vision is that all those who enter our church or who meet our church members outside our church will receive some of Jesus' life giving water, and having received some of his water will come back for more.
We envision a church:
-
Where happy children play and grow in God's love, just as the children whom Jesus welcomed to himself. (Matt 19:13-15)
- Where enthusiastic young people are challenged to seek first the Kingdom of God and are guided in discipleship, just as the young men that Jesus called on the shores of Galilee. (Matt 4:18-22)
- Where fulfilled adults, both working and retired, are called to yield their entire lives as holy sacrifices to God and are equipped for effective ministry in the world. (Rom 12:1-2, Eph 4:11-12)
- Where families are strengthened in their commitments so that all members of these families are blessed. (Eph 5:21)
- Where single people are so fully incorporated in the church family that, like Jesus and St. Paul before them, they consider their singleness to be a divine calling, which offers blessings for others, as well as for themselves. (I Cor 7:8)
- Where visitors to our church comment on the joy of our worship, the love that we have for each other and the hospitality that we extend to them. (Phil 4:4, I Jn 4:7, Rom 12:13b)
- And where all of us, as we face the great challenges and struggles of life, find in our Christian faith not only the power and hope to meet the test, but to grow in wisdom and maturity, "until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ." (Eph 4:13)
We also envision a church:
-
Which is eager to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with all people in all nations, and which supports this commitment through personal witness, prayer and offerings. (Matt 28:18-20)
- Which demonstrates its care for others through many members' participation in missions to our city and in missions beyond our city and which generously shares its wealth to relieve human suffering throughout the world. (Luke 10:25-37)
- Which shares God's passion that there be peace on earth and that "justice roll down like waters," and which is an advocate for God's peace and justice in Augusta and throughout the world. (Zeh 9:9-10, Amox 5:24)
- And most of all, in which every member considers him or herself to be a minister, called by Christ to serve him and glorify him in all of life, "forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead; pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus." (Phil 3:13-14)
